Railroad update #1

Railroad update #1

The Newbie Haven move is complete! The cottage was rotated through 90° overnight and this morning Mar logged on to shift all the contents into their new position. Apologies if you logged into the Haven while I was asleep, before I had a chance to move everything, and found it looking all higgledy-piggledy!

Here’s the new location, and as you can see there’s still tons of room at the front of the Haven:

I’ve edited the notecard that’s given out by the information sign in the Haven, to include some new info about the railroad, together with landmarks to the rez station and the nearby local terminus where you can call the trains from. Sadly, there’s a huge bit of land with banlines on it that’s stopping one section of the track from being built, so I do hope the creators can get access to that part.

The railroad’s a-comin’

The railroad’s a-comin’

I’m taking a short break from the main blog (we all need a bit of a breather now and then, don’t we?) but that probably means I’ll be updating over here (and on Mar’s Twitter account) a bit more.

Today, Mar’s landlord contacted her about something new that’s going to come through the region where her home – and the Newbie Haven there – sits: a pretty cool multi-region railroad project that’s being built. I’d noticed the bridge near the front of the house, but it wasn’t until I raised draw distance and cammed behind the house that I saw the track stopping behind it. Eek!

However, it sounds like an interesting project that will be fun for newbies and oldbies alike to ride (I sure as heck am looking forward to having a go on it!) so I’m happy to make the few small changes that my landlord requested. I won’t be losing any prims, but the cottage that houses the Newbie Haven will just need to be moved a tad. We think that a 90° anti-clockwise rotation will be enough, and will leave plenty of space in front of the house for a landing spot between the house and the tracks.

Here’s the track location as it appears on the main map:

Hop behind the cut for a bigger, closer picture showing the railroad and how the cottage will probably be moved.

Admin post: Mea culpa :(

Admin post: Mea culpa :(

Mar has committed a terrible faux pas, and I feel absolutely awful about it, especially considering my ongoing efforts to inform newbies about etiquette in Second Life.

Some time ago, Mar put together a hedge-making kit containing two hedge textures, a hedge sculpted prim, and the sculpt map she used to make that prim (which she found in a freebie, full-permission sculpt map pack). At the time she didn’t even think about checking the creator of the sculpt map to see if they had any wishes regarding the possible resale of the item (I was completely green about intellectual property rights in Second Life back then), and in all honesty I had completely forgotten all about it. That was incredibly thoughtless of me, and now that it’s been brought to my attention I’m utterly mortified, because I am not that person who does things like that intentionally.

I have now unlisted the kit from SL Marketplace, removed it from both of my Magic Boxes (which means that, even if someone has an old link open in a browser tab, the item does not exist and cannot be sent by the boxes – nor will they be charged for it) and also removed it from my little stall in Baileya. Since the kit was for sale for L$10, this means that Mar has made money out of it and, while the original sculpt map texture is from a kit that the creator offers freely, I still feel bad that this has helped to pay my in-world rent on the Newbie Haven (which is also my home) for so long. To that end, I’ve tried to make reparation to the creator, inasmuch as I can guess what I have earned from the item and can afford at the moment.

This is a public apology to the creator: Cel Edman. Cel, I am terribly sorry.

To everyone else: if you intend to put together anything as I did, please check the creator of any full-permission items that you intend to include, to avoid making such a faux pas yourself.

Please visit Cel Edman’s store, where you can find his free sculpt map kit, as well as many other great sculpt map packs for sale.

Dany Free Touch

Dany Free Touch

UPDATE: Sadly, the Dany French Touch store no longer seems to be in-world, and the dollarbie items that Dany had for sale on SL Marketplace aren’t there any more, so I’ve removed the link to the store (as people were still clicking it to visit there).

Dany French Touch has dropped a blinder of a sale in-world. Everything in the store is now free. I fear this may be the precursor to Dany closing the store (if we lose yet another wonderful designer then Mar may well just cry!) but the group notice gave no mention of a limited time, or even of a closing down sale, so let’s hope it’s just a supremely generous offer.

Ladies, if you want gowns, then you MUST go to this sale. Gents, if you want suits, formalwear, roleplay outfits, or even just some great, well-textured clothes, then you need to pay a visit, too. Everyone: outfit your alts!

BE WARNED: the store has been packed with avatars since the notice went out. Mar’s LM above will land you slap in the middle of it, so if you’re worried about dropping on someone’s head and want to land somewhere a bit quieter, paste the LM into chat in-world and click it. Then, click the ‘Show on Map’ button. You’ll be able to see the piles of green dots showing where avatars are, and you should be able to make out the store. Click somewhere around the store in an empty space, then click the Teleport button. (If you’re high up before teleporting, such as in a skybox, then it’s a good idea to fly before you TP, otherwise you’ll end up falling to the ground!)

Hop behind the cut for a few pics of just some of the freebies Mar got there.

All about the Lady

All about the Lady

Part of this outfit is named Germanotta, which some may not know is Lady Gaga’s real surname, hence the title of this post. Mar wanted to gussie up in something a little bit more elegant than the summery silk skirt and sequinned cami that she’s been sporting lately, and a rummage through inventory brought up this classy high-waisted pantsuit by R.icielli.

A past TDR offering, it needs very little in the way of anything else. Great heels (Mar’s beloved Noir Stilettos from HoC Apparel), fabulous hair (Blake in streaked mahogany, from Truth), and my current favourite jewellery (the Medaille series by Gabriel), as well as an old favourite prim manicure (Sexy Girl A in black, by Love Soul) and this outfit is complete. I did toy with the idea of a bag, but nothing short of a teeny clutch would have worked, and in all honesty I think it’s complete without another thing.

Newbie No-No’s: Part 2 – Littering

Newbie No-No’s: Part 2 – Littering

Welcome to Second Life, newbie! This Newbie No-No’s series is intended to be a light-hearted look at the don’ts of newbiedom in-world. Hopefully, the major don’ts are pretty obvious (don’t be a jerk, don’t grief, don’t be rude… well, all of those boil down to “don’t be a jerk”, really) but the lesser don’ts can be a bit of a minefield and it can be hard for a newbie to understand the various social mores in-world.

We continue the series with littering.

If your car broke down in real life, would you just leave it by the side of the road? Well, assuming you’re not one of the less-delightful itinerant types who frequently wreck greenbelt areas with knackered old vehicles and other junk when they move on, then no; of course you wouldn’t. If you buy something from a store in real life, would you unpack it and dump the packaging on the floor of the shop before walking out? I should hope not! And, if you buy fast food from a drive-through in real life, would you chuck the empty bags and cartons out of your car window when you’re finished with it? Well, if you would, then no wonder the city/countryside/etc is a mess…

But, in the main, if you wouldn’t do it in real life, there is no reason to do it in Second Life. Just because SL is ‘a game’ that doesn’t mean there aren’t other people in it: other people who have to bear the visual and aural annoyances of your littering should you choose to be a messy, thoughtless resident in-world. One of the unspoken golden rules of Second Life is: If you put it down at some point, pick it up when you’re done with it.

1. If you open a boxed item in a store because they haven’t set an auto-return time, then pick up the box (or delete it) once you’ve finished.

2. If you do #1 with a hunt item in a store then especially make sure you get rid of the box, or you’ll have hundreds of people coming in after you who think your ‘dud’ opened hunt item is the real thing. You don’t want to piss off hundreds of other people whom you may well bump into sometime in-world, right?

3. If the vehicle you’re driving/flying/piloting in some manner crashes and throws you off, go back, find it, and delete it or take it back into inventory. It will often have gone up into the air a bit, so don’t assume that just because that particle-spewing, roaring trials bike or monster truck isn’t on the ground where you last remember being it must be gone, because it isn’t. Take the time to fly around and look for it. If you didn’t get a chat message saying it’s been returned to your Lost and Found folder, then it’s still stuck in-world somewhere, and that ‘somewhere’ is probably right on the border of some poor person’s private land, where they can see it and hear it, but can’t get rid of it. And, dear newbie, karma is a bitch with a dry sense of humour, because one day that poor person with the spitting, roaring spaceship on their doorstep might be you

Think you can get away with it, because nobody will know it was you that left it behind? Think again. Every single item in Second Life can be inspected by anyone, and it will bear the name of the last owner. So, if you don’t want angry IMs, and if you don’t want to be abuse reported for prim-littering (which, for many people, is the only resort when vehicles are abandoned near their land parcels), then pick up your mess!

Strut your stuff!

Strut your stuff!

And you can do it in SF Design‘s new March freebie: the fabby Leopard Print High Heels.

These great heels are colour-change, giving you seven colour options for that leopardskin texture. Please note: these shoes don’t have invisiprims, so they will only work on Viewer 2 and third party viewers that support alpha layers.

Boys, you’re not left out, either. Hop behind the cut for your great footwear freebie from SF Design this month!

Frick’s final hurrah

Frick’s final hurrah

*sigh* Another wonderful store in SL is closing down. Fricka Morgath’s Frick skins and clothing store will soon close (probably around April 1st, or so the notice says). Until then all of her stock is set to 50% off, and if you don’t head over there you’ll be missing the chance to bag some amazing skins at great prices.

Frick specialises in goth, fae, and fantasy-themed skins (although there are many other types at the store, alongside clothing and some lovely skyboxes on the top floor), so if that’s your thing then head on over before April 1st!

You can keep up-to-date on Fricka’s possible future plans at her blog: http://frickafrick.wordpress.com/

New group gifts at Gabriel and Rozoregalia

New group gifts at Gabriel and Rozoregalia

Hi, peeps! I have some gorgeous new jewellery group gifts for you today :)

First up, Gabriel group (joinable for free at the store – just head North once you land to get there) is this male and female Two-Strand Necklace. Wear your group tag and click to receive (and there are other group gifts on the wall to get, too!) –

There’s a 50% sale at Gabriel right now, so it’s a good time to snag some bargains. They’re out of the price remit for this blog (average is L$200), but Mar picked up a fatpack of four lovely dresses for L$500 (when each individual one was L$200 – I do love a bargain!)

I was checking out the new group gift at Gabriel and couldn’t resist the 50% sale; bought the fatpack of Fur Highneck Sweater Dresses (L$200 each or the fatpack of FOUR for L$500? No contest!).

And then I cammed to the back of the store and saw some jewellery sets that drew me like a magpie. OMG they are beautiful.
